The First Annual
D.U.S.T. Campout
The Story:
The inspiration for D.U.S.T comes from the Lobo ghost town and the group of Germans who held music and art festivals there for over 20 years. Although we are nine miles from the ghost town, our goal is to keep the spirit of Lobo alive by continuing the tradition of semiannual gatherings around art, music and community.
Our first D.U.S.T gathering was Memorial Day weekend with art and live music after sunset. D.U.S.T. Campout focuses more on the downtime spent camping, chatting, making and sharing.
D.U.S.T. is a collaboration hosted by Wini Hunton-Chan and Adam Bork.
Here’s to the D.U.S.T. community and to all the friends we haven’t met yet.
Camp:
BYO everything, especially drinking water. With that said, we have shade, grills, a solar shower and composting toilets. We have enough solar power to charge your phone, etc., but not much more. You should be comfortable camping off-grid in the desert with unpredictable weather. If not, staying in Van Horn, Fort Davis, Valentine or Marfa works too.
Connect:
Connection & community is what it is all about, but in the most low-stakes way possible. We have introvert spaces where you can go to bed early and ponder the silence and the stars. Or you can stay up all night playing music. Connect with the land and each other. Have the conversations you’ve been longing for. Or enjoy the solitude. Share a meal, a snack, a drink. Or don’t. Just show up and be curious. The rest will follow.
Create:
Bring your projects. Come make something. We are not gatekeeping creation here. Contact us about any art installations or about spaces/electricity/other needs for any project you’d like to do. Although D.U.S.T. has roots in music and art, we are also teachers, nature lovers, DIYers and generally curious people. We welcome those who may not consider themselves artists or musicians. Create a PowerPoint. Crochet a blanket. We’re here for it.
How it Works:
Email dustlobo@gmail.com for directions and with questions. Show up. If you want to share something – a song, a sculpture, a workshop, a performance, a reading, a cocktail, whatever! – write your offering on one of our chalkboards at the start of the day. The chalkboards will become our collaborative program. As the day goes on, we’ll share pics of the chalkboards to our Instagram for non-campers driving in from town.
D.U.S.T. will always be a free gathering; however, dāna is welcome.
Contact:
Wini for most questions. Adam for questions regarding sound & music & explosions.
We look forward to hearing from you!
